With the KLX230S off-road and dual-sport motorcycle, Kawasaki expands its KLX portfolio for 2022. It comes in as an advanced version of the popular KLX230.
Of course, this isn’t the bike for all of us, but for short-inseam riders, new riders, or individuals who want to downsize or just ride in the dirt.
Some of the most notable changes include reduced suspension travel at both ends. Lowering the suspension makes it quite accessible, especially if you’re planning to use it as a dirt bike.
You also notice that the front fork is shorter, and works with shorter dual-stage springs and a firmer spring (than KLX®230 ABS and KLX®230 models) for the linkage-assisted shock.
The manufacturer shortened it by 2.4 inches to bring the seat down to 32.7 inches, the same height as the KTM 390 Duke.
Apart from that, the motor remains unchanged, but the ABS version of the S gets a larger front disc for dual-sport riding and a 2.0-gallon fuel tank.

Seat Height: | 34.7 Inches | Wet Weight: | 309 Pounds |
The upgraded 2021 dual-purpose ready-for-anything Honda CRF300L does it all better. But what we like most about this machine is its sticker price and its suitability for beginners.
Now, a bigger displacement (an increase of 15 percent (36cc) to a new 286cc) with an engine’s peak power of 27 hp (20.1 kW) at 8,500 rpm and torque of 26.6 Nm (19.6 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm should have just the right output if you’re getting the hang of riding and enough if you’ve more seat time to have fun. And remember, it starts right up, too, even in cold weather.
Other improvements include revised camshaft fitting and timing, a different slipper assist clutch, a shorter 1st to 5th gearbox ratio (6th gear is taller for better long-distance rides), an updated air filter, and a new exhaust system, which Honda claims is lighter and reduces sound.
Besides, the sharp new bodywork marks the 2021 upgrades with a slimmer 2.06-gallon fuel tank, a narrower forward seat, an improved riding position, and a new, clear, crisp white positive LCD screen display.
Honda CRF300L is 8.8 pounds lighter than the previous model.
3. KTM 390 Adventure

Frame: | Steel Trellis | Transmission/Final Drive: | 6-Speed/Chain |
Front Suspension: | WP Apex USD Fork, Adjustable; 6.7 Inches of Travel | Rear Suspension: | WP Apex Monoshock, Spring Preload Adjustable; 7.0-Inches of Travel |
Front Brake: | Bybre Radial Four-Piston Caliper, 320mm Disc W/ABS | Rear Brake: | Byre Two-Piston Caliper, 230mm Disc W/ABS |

Wheelbase: | 56.3 Inches | Fuel Capacity: | 3.8 Gallons |
Seat Height: | 33.7 Inches | Wet Weight: | 387 Pounds |
Affordable, approachable, and giving you everything without sacrificing an ounce of quality… the 2021 KTM 390 Adventure inspires you to go on off-road adventures. In actual fact, this is not your average entry-level ride.
Its state-of-the-art engine is incredibly powerful even after upgrading to BS-VI compliance. It’s paired with a 6-speed gearbox, a slipper clutch, and a standard quick shifter. According to the manufacturer, the motor makes 43.4 PS of maximum power and 37 Nm of peak torque.
In addition, the new 390 ADV features the WP APEX 43 suspension in the front wheel. The suspension feels firm, and its performance is beyond what you expect on a small adventure bike.
The rear WP APEX–Monoshock has more travel as well as adjustable preload and rebound to help you tackle those steep slopes. This provides better and more precise damping, which results in improved handling and stability.
4. Honda CRF450RL 2021

Engine Ignition: | DC-CDI | Compression Ratio: | 12.0:1 |
Frame: | Twin-Spar Aluminum | Transmission/Final Drive: | 6-Speed/Chain; 13T/51T |
Front Suspension: | 49mm Inverted Showa Telescopic Fork, Adjustable; 12-Inch Travel | Rare Suspension: | Pro-Link Fork, Spring Reload Adjustable; 18.8-Inch Travel |
Front Brake: | Two-Piston Caliper, 260mm Disc | Rear Brake: | One-Piston Caliper, 240mm Disc |
Tires – Front & Rear: | IRC GP; 80/100-21 & 120/80-18 | Rake/Trail: | 28.5 Degrees/4.8 Inches |
Wheelbase: | 58.9 Inches | Ground Clearance: | 12.6 Inches |
Seat Height: | 37.2 Inches | Wet Weight: | 291 Pounds |
More experienced, or professional riders, like Ricky Carmichael, a man regarded as “The Goat” for his unrivaled success on two wheels, will find the Honda CRF450RL (previously referred to as the CRF450L) incredible because of its durability and refined thoughtful details.
That starts with a powerful (38.7 hp @ 7,600 rpm) and smoother low-end performance (27.8 lb-ft @ 6,600 rpm) engine. A closer ratio transmission and easier-to-modulate cable clutch allow you to stay within the ideal rpm range.
The bike also features a stiffer and lighter aluminum twin-spar frame, longer lower control arms in the front, and lower links in the rear. The slicker handguards keep your hands and levers in good shape.
A $400 price decrease (man what a buy at $9,990!) is always welcome as well.
5. KTM 500 EXC-F

Frame: | Chrome-Molybdenum Steel | Transmission/Final Drive: | 6-Speed/Chain |
Front Suspension: | 48mm WP USD Forks; 11.8 Inches of Travel | Rear Suspension: | WP Xplor PDS Link-Less Shock Absorber; 12.2 Inches of Travel |
Front Brake: | Disc Brake | Rear Brake: | Disc Brake |
Tires – Front & Rear: | 90/90-21 & 120/90-18 | Rake/Trail: | 26.5 Degrees/TBD |
Wheelbase: | 58.3 Inches | Fuel Capacity: | 2.34 Gallons |
Seat Height: | 37.8 Inches | Wet Weight: | 387 Pounds |
This is possibly the best KTM dual-sport enduro dirt bike you can buy in America today. Perhaps it’s because of the large and upright seat. Or it’s the capacity to sit at three-digit speeds and not complain.
But the KTM 500 EXC-F’s 510cc fuel-injected SOHC motor takes a fair share of its glory. It is the most powerful and refined, according to the Austrian motorcycle maker. And riders who have experienced this power machine will agree with me that it constantly yearns to expand its legs.
KTM designed the bike for interstate travel and long days in the saddle. But it’s not always about catching every butterfly, counting every tree, and interpreting every cloud.
It’s more about getting to distant places in the shortest amount of time possible. And if that’s the case, you can bet the 2022 KTM 500 EXC-F’s Six Days is loaded with a ton of exceptional features, from a robust 6-speed transmission, a liquid cooling system, a 2.38-gallon gas tank to adjustable tapered handlebars.
6. Suzuki DR-Z400S

Front Brake: | 250mm Disc W/Two-Piston Caliper | Rear Brake: | 220mm Disc W/One-Piston Caliper |
Tires – Front & Rear: | 80/100 x 21 & 120/90 x 18 | Rake/Trail: | 27.1 Degrees/4.2 Inches |
Wheelbase: | 58.5 Inches | Fuel Capacity: | 2.6 Gallons |
Seat Height: | 36.8 Inches | Curb Weight: | 317 Pounds |
The DR-Z400S is a nimble handling and excellent dual sport with a wide range of features, which makes it a capable travel companion on your favorite off-road trail.
You will be awe-struck with its crisp handling from the adjustable suspension and the amount of torque generated from the 398cc liquid-cooled engine. Also, the SK chassis is lightweight and narrow, making it quite easy to maneuver on different terrains.
But the best thing about the 2021 Suzuki DR-Z400S is that the manufacturer prioritized comfort and stability to make it the perfect choice for both on- and off-road riding. It now includes a pouch on the rear fender, an easy-to-read instrument cluster, and on-road legal lighting.
The PAIR system injects air into the exhaust, helping the motorcycle achieve emissions compliance without compromising on performance.
There are several other motorcycles in this class, from the 198.5cc Suzuki DR200S for $4,649, the 411cc Royal Enfield Himalayan for just $4,999, the 292cc Kawasaki KLX300 at $5,599, or the 250cc Yamaha WR250R starting at $6,699.
Mid-Size Adventure Motorcycles
These bikes are also a fantastic option, as they offer a compromise with less engine displacement than their 1,000cc (+) counterparts, which, at least for me, provide the benefits of compact design, opening up trail rides, and single-track.
We’ll highlight our best picks.

The Kawasaki Versys 650 LT adventure bike is famous for its rider-friendly nature, incredible trail prowess, and dependability. These attributes make it a must-have for every daring rider.
At the heart of this power, the machine is an excellent parallel-twin engine with its 180-degree crank. The handguards will protect your hands from the overgrown brush that makes thin country roads even narrower.
The adjustable windscreen will deflect the hot summer wind, and the 41mm telescopic fork and offset shock will absorb any patchwork pavement. The same parallel-twin powerplant as seen in Kawasaki’s Ninja 650 and Z650 models power this amazing machine.
These features help create an adventure bike that is controllable, versatile, and financially accessible. It’s a comfortable ride!

Seat Height: | 34.4 Inches | Wet Weight: | 452 Pounds |
The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is a no compromise midsize adventure ride. It was first introduced to the European market in 2020 and now makes its US debut as a 2021 model.
The 2021 Ténéré 700 adventure touring motorcycle uses the legendary MT-07 engine, the 689cc CP2 parallel twin (dubbed the CP2), which produces roughly 73 horsepower.
It broadens the 50-pound-feet of torque for dirt emphasis with a Ténéré-specific airbox, altered EFI mapping, and a new muffler.
Even with the stock exhaust can, the 270-degree crank has a sweet sound that soothes your soul. But there is no touchscreen, traction control, inertial measurement unit sensor, rider modes, or any of that advanced technology that you fear will fail on you out riding in the wilds. Although the absence of such features is a sticking point for some.
Its best feature may be the price ($9,999). Combining that with its general accessibility and on- and off-road adaptability, the 2021 Yamaha Ténéré 700 appeals even to seasoned riders.

Its pearl vigor blue and metallic matte sword silver paint (with graphics) blend in perfectly with the spoke-style wheels and the blue-anodized rims.
The exceptional 650XT also integrates other incredible features that make it a logical and fun machine to ride. Among them is the powerful 90˚ V-twin engine, which is not only capable of delivering stellar performance but also great in fuel economy.

Seat Height: | 34.6 Inches | Wet Weight: | 463 pounds |
The most popular mid-range KTM adventure bike lies right in the middle, with the 890 Adventure R.
Even the manufacturer admits the 890 is an impressive ADV dirt bike. Gone are the marketing messages about world travel comfort we see in their previous versions. Here, the machine’s label is, “The Most Travel-Capable Off-Road Bike” and uses “new engine platforms with more horsepower and torque,” according to KTM.
And, sure, apart from a 90cc increase in displacement from 799c to the 889c, added bore and stroke, along with extra compression and 20 percent more mass at the crank, aid in producing a peak of 105 hp at 8,000 RPM and 73.7 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 RPM.
Just under 10bhp more power and just under 10 pound-feet bump in torque compared to the 790 Adventure R. Still, it meets stricter emissions standards.
But the all-new machine isn’t just the 790 with a better engine. Weight-saving refinements (like a lighter subframe and a new aluminum instead of steel steering stem), cleated platform footpegs, a one-piece rally-style seat, and the 40% on-road and 60% off-road rated tubeless spoked wheels make the long list of changes.

Seat Height: | 34.25 Inches | Dry Weight: | 443 Pounds |
If you are looking for an off-roader, a tourer, and sporty enough to be fun in the twisties, then the Tiger 900 Rally Pro might just be your ideal option. It goes head-to-head with bikes like the KTM 890 Adventure R and BMW F 850 GS.

Big Adventure Motorcycles
There remains an extensive selection of big, high-displacement, technologically sophisticated motorcycles, and the options in this range continue to grow. They are the SUVs of the two-wheeled world and range from desert trekkers to urban warriors.
These are our best choice of bigger bikes of 1,000cc or more.

For the 2021 model year, the Africa Twin received the new generation Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES with a higher engine displacement, now 1,084cc.
The new parallel twin is still not a horsepower monster when compared to the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special (Honda claims a 6% boost of horsepower), but the torque has increased significantly. The bike feels much livelier and quicker.
The Unicam churns out around 101 horsepower at the crank and has a rear-wheel torque of around 77 pound-feet, according to Honda. That torque is distributed across a large peak that begins at 3,000 RPM and extends to just 6,250 rpm at top speed.
The engineers mated the powerplant to a 6-speed transmission available in DCT or manual with a 525-chain drive.
It’s also loaded with a ton of other features such as two-user and four-factory ride modes, lean-sensitive ABS, throttle by wire, 12-volt and USB accessory outlets, paddle shifters, heated grips, and cruise control.
Others include a 6.5″ TFT display (shows the power), engine braking, and traction control settings along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth Connectivity, and Showa Electronic Suspension.

Other incredible features include a myriad of practical riding aids such as selectable power modes, IMU governed ABS, low RPM assist, traction control, an Easy Start System, and cruise control.
However, the unique thing about the 1050XT Tour is the wide range of adventure-focused accessories incorporated into the bike. Some of these include an adjustable windshield, a mounting bar, a center stand, USB charging ports, and 9.8-gallon aluminum panniers.
The big V-Strom 1050XT Tour also comes in several color options. But that will depend on the country you’re in. For those in Canada, it’s being sold with a different name: the 2021 V-Strom 1050XA Adventure.
15. Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 ES Adventure

The beastly 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R runs on a 75° V-twin engine that now meets Euro 5 emissions standards. It has a reworked exhaust system and improved heat dissipation.
Despite Euro 5 compliance, the LC8 still produces a peak of 160 hp at 9,000 rpm (the same as the 2020 model), but the torque drops to 101.8 from 103.2 pound-feet. Different ride modes help release/tame the potential of the powerplant both on- and off-road.
Its chassis delivers the required on-road connection to the Bridgestone A41 tires, even though it’s a tall bike. And the cornering ABS is excellent and the stopping power is strong.
The 6.1-gallon gas tank should provide a decent range (around 200 miles).
